about

What if there were no robins -

Red breasts thrust regally forward

Racing, hopping on wire-like springs

Across the expanse of green

Beyond our windows

Making happy little chirpy sounds

Heads tilted slightly to the side

To hear the smoothly slithering slide

Of slimy, squirmy, silent things

Just beneath the surface of the

Spongy, snow-melt turf

To welcome in the spring?

The Ides of March plus one

April showers already come

To melt late winter snow

The first of spring just five days hence

Daffodils blooming along the fence

Bird sounds cheerily drifting in

Through the windows closed

Against the brisk March wind.

But the Robins?

No sighting on the green

Late they be arriving

It seems to me this year

But surely as the daylight lengthens

And the March snows disappear

There must be, there have to be

Robins somewhere near.

Tom Reynolds

March 16, 2013

Written over a decade ago, my grandfather's words are about the coming of spring, the desperate anticipation of the sensory experience of the changing of the seasons. What if the chill air never changes? What if the rains subside and the ground never thaws? We have only faith that there will be robins again.
